ARE WE HARD TO LOVE?
Great news! The new medications and additional prescriptions are working very well. It has been three days since my last breakdown and unlike the previous week, I don't cry out of nowhere that often anymore. Thank you for all your encouraging words and your prayers.
While browsing articles on how to handle depression I came across a youtube video that tackled dating and depression. Dating someone with depression can be quite challenging but there are various approaches that you can do to make the relationship work.
Before sharing the tips below, please be reminded that people who have depression are suffering from such mental illness due to their brain's chemical imbalance so avoid thinking that things can be solved instantly. It takes time to heal and they would be very glad if you're willing to be part of their healing process.
Here are some of the things you need to do if you're depressed yet want to give dating a shot
- Good mental hygiene
What's a good mental hygiene? Every morning we wake up and go straight to our daily task like taking a bath, brushing our teeth or putting on make up. So here's something I would like to suggest -- before you get out of bed, think of three things you are grateful for. Eventually, these three things will push you to continue your day and send you positivity which includes your dating life.
- Keep yourself occupied
Most psychiatrists suggest that you have to keep yourself occupied. Do something unusual. Learn how to play a new instrument or learn how to play any sport. If you want to start dating, the first thing you need to do is to STOP thinking whether you are compatible with each other. I suggest that you go and enjoy things together -- go hiking and enjoy the nature or go on a long drive and enjoy watching the sunset.
- Stop ruminating the past and worrying about the future
Believe it or not, one of the things that stops me from dating is that fact that I overthink. I think too much about how my potential partner looks at my situation. Sometimes I'm afraid that maybe he doesn't like dating people with depression. Well, if you really want to start dating then you have to learn how to live in the now. You have to give up the memories of the past and stop worrying about your future, which contributes a lot to depression. So the next time you want to start dating again, think about living in the present and just enjoy every moment.
Here are some of the things you can do if you're dating someone with depression
- Give them choices
When you go on a date with someone with depression give them options on where to go. People who suffer from depression have a hard time concentrating so maybe they'd prefer watching a movie and dinner instead of attending concerts. Also, depressed people who are under medications are prohibited to drink alcohol and coffee so I highly suggest you bring them to a tea place.
EXTRA TIP: Chamomile is the best tea for people who have anxiety and depression because it makes us feel more relaxed.
- Make them laugh as hard as you can
Although I have to admit that it won't resolve depression, it's a temporary escape for us. Try your best to cheer them up and make them laugh. Don't force things, you are not superman and I will tell you this -- we are the only ones who can make ourselves better, but your support, care, and assurance help us in fighting depression.
- Stay positive
Being around a person who is depressed and pessimistic can be very difficult. We usually take things negatively and most of the time we notice little actions and often overthink that maybe people don't like us. You always have to stay positive and remain calm. The best way to do it is to remind them about the good things in life. Cheer them up when something stressful happens and be there when they need you. Don't worry, they'll understand if you're not available daily but gently assure them that you care.
